How to Deep Clean an Apartment Before Moving In

Aiming for a fresh start in your new apartment? The best way to really feel at home in your new space is to deep clean your apartment before moving in. While it’s likely your new home doesn’t look exceptionally dirty, it’s a good practice to clean thoroughly before you’re all moved in. Use the following tips to deep clean your new apartment:

1. Start with the Kitchen

The kitchen is generally where you will spend the majority of your time (outside of your bedroom). Since you will be preparing food in your kitchen, it is essential that you properly sanitize everything in it. Moreover, you’ll want to ensure that any spills, smells, and leftover food from the last tenant are completely gone.

Start wiping down the surfaces, disinfecting the appliances, and doing a thorough job of sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping. Make it a point to get in all the nooks and crannies behind the fridge, stove, and around the cupboards. Be sure to clean the inside of ovens, microwaves, toaster ovens and the like to make sure everything is fully sanitized.

2. Clean the Walls

Often an overlooked area, the walls are one surface that needs to be cleaned as much as any other part of the house. Walls often collect fingerprints, dust, and stains. Get ready to put in some elbow grease and wipe down the walls with a liquid stick or a sponge. If you really want to have a fresh start, consider repainting the walls.

3. Have the Floor Cleaned

A real deep clean is easiest to do if it is performed by professionals. Whether you have wood, tile, or carpet flooring, hiring someone else to use professional tools to clean the floor will ensure that everything is thoroughly sanitized. This is especially important if former tenants had any pets, as the hair and fur is likely still trapped in the flooring. While you’re working to sanitize the floor, don’t forget to clean below appliances and around heating vents.

4. Scrub All the Sinks

Every sink in your apartment from your kitchen to your bathroom needs a complete cleaning. Use a disinfectant to spray the sinks down and let them soak. After a few hours, rinse the sink out, wipe down the surface, and clean around the faucet and knobs. If you notice there is an odor, fix this by using water and baking soda to get rid of any smells.

The same goes for cleaning your shower or bathtub. Make sure to spray the walls with bleach to ensure that the surfaces are completely disinfected. Use vinegar to help remove any mildew or soap scum.

5. Clean Your Bedroom

If you’re moving in, it’s likely that your bedroom is as empty as possible. Take this time to make sure everything, including dust and dirt, are out of your room. Vacuum the furthest corners of your room to ensure everything is ready for you to bring your belongings in.
